March 31 Service :: "Believe It or Not" by Ps. Andy

We had such a great service yesterday at Teenacity! Philip led us into worship and introduced a lovely new worship song called "Assuredly Yours" by Olie Sebastion from Paradise Community Church (Adelaide, Australia). Wendy did such a fantastic job chairing the service and so did Mun Teng by leading the Tithes & Offering time. Then came Ps. Andy with a message entitled "Believe It or Not." Some of the highlights from the message were:

A story was shared (as below) to illustrate the kind of relationship many of us have with our God:

One night a house caught fire and a young boy was forced to flee to the roof. The father stood on the ground below with outstretched arms, calling to his son, "Jump! I'll catch you." He knew the boy had to jump to save his life. All the boy could see, however, was flame, smoke, and blackness. As can be imagined, he was afraid to leave the roof. His father kept yelling: "Jump! I will catch you." But the boy protested, "Daddy, I can't see you." The father replied, "But I can see you and that's all that matters."

Sometimes we aren't able to see beyond our circumstances and our current situations, and it can be scary to take the next steps - especially when things are so uncertain. But God often challenges us to have full trust in Him and to believe Him for who He is. Believing is very important!

Ps. Andy further illustrated the importance of believing and having uncompromising, radical faith in God through the miraculous accounts found in Mark 5:21 - 42, where we read about the healing of the woman with the issue of blood, and the raising of Jairus' 12 year old daughter from the dead. Later on in Mark 6:1-6, we learned that the people in Nazareth had a different perception of Jesus, that lead to "no mighty work" performed and the Bible says that Jesus "marveled because of their unbelief." It was the same Jesus, but the people had a different perception. Jesus was still the same miracle-working God, but the people's unbelief resulted in "no mighty work" done.

Some important statements made during the sermon:

"Fear is the opposite of Faith"

“Unbelief achieves nothing!” – Rev. Kenneth Chin

We later explored the story of Lazarus being raised from the dead - another powerful miracle performed by Jesus. (Joneil coming out from the "cave" totally wrapped in toilet paper was a nice touch! Haha!)

More gold nuggets from the message:

Believing produces values / change / fruits / miracles / life
Believing makes you radical
Believing makes the impossible, possible

Hebrews 11:6 - But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

"Our problem sometimes is not that we believe wrongly but that we don’t believe in anything!"

"We cannot stand with one leg in one boat and one leg in another."

"If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything!"

"Understanding is the reward of faith. Therefore, seek not to understand that thou mayest believe, but believe that thou mayest understand." - St. Augustine.

"Faith is to believe what we do not see, and the reward of faith is to see what we believe." - St. Augustine.
